BigBand Networks and Fujitsu team on cable network transport solutions - Business - Brief - Brief Article
BigBand Networks Inc., a provider of broadband multimedia routing systems for broadcast television and advanced services, and Fujitsu Network Communications announced a strategic relationship. Under terms of the nonexclusive agreement, the two companies are packaging the BigBand Networks Broadband Multimedia-Service Router (BMR) with the Fujitsu FLASHWAVE 4500 multiservice optical transport platform to enable a unified broadband video transport solution.
This integration enables cable operators to transport high-quality video programming between facilities over optical fiber via standard protocols such as Gigabit Ethernet and SONET, enhancing network flexibility, functionality and cost effectiveness. Solutions combining BigBand Networks and Fujitsu platforms transform cable networks towards greater multi-service capability, with support for all media. Applications include: convergence of multiple media and services onto a single transport facility; support for digital headend consolidation; extension of cable networks through efficient long-haul transport of high-quality video content; enhanced service reliability through redundant switching to alternative content sources for events such as downlink interference of fiber cuts; and targeted digital programming, as in geographically zoned ad insertion.
This alliance combines BigBand Networks' expertise in digital video processing, protocol conversion and high-speed switching with leadership from Fujitsu in optical networking and transport. The companies have deployed their combined solution with several major cable operators in large urban systems with over 100,000 subscribers and will continue to work together on joint marketing, sales and other activities.
