Video endoscopy monitors bearing damage
FAG has extended its online condition monitoring range to now include video endoscopy, designed to observe and assess damage that can not be repaired immediately. The new system is already in use within the shipping industry, where parts cannot be restored or replaced until reaching a dry dock. The service includes a miniature camera which enables visual inspection of damage detected by vibration diagnostics.
It also provides more detailed information about the degree and progression of damage on the defective component.
The procedure includes a movable optical system with integrated CCD chip and light guide, which is inserted into the bearing housing through special service openings.
This allows the bearing parts, including inner and outer rings, rolling elements and cage to be thoroughly inspected.
The video images can be then followed on screen and stored for future examination and repairs.
FAG already has the system in place on ship's azimuth drives for various customers.
The drives, which are mounted on the hull to achieve a significant improvement in manoeuvrability, propel the vessel and serve as rudders.
The bearings incorporated in the drives are observed by the FAG online condition monitoring systems, including the video endoscopy which detects any damage at its earliest stage and allows for advance planning of repairs.
Once the video has recorded damage, the documentation makes it possible for FAG experts to arrive at a much more precise assessment of the remaining bearing service life.
The video endoscopy is one of the slimmest devices used in industrial applications and is, therefore, even suitable for conducting visual inspections of small bearings.
